Audit Services is the watchdog for the citizens of Denver, conducting independent financial, compliance, and performance audits of City agencies, programs, and contracts.  Our audits focus on reducing costs, increasing efficiency, improving the quality of services, and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial information. This is accomplished by providing useful and objective information to the City’s management team, City Council, and the Audit Committee to improve the effectiveness of risk management, internal control, and the governance processes.

Our authority is granted by the City Charter, Article V, Part 2, Section 1, General Powers and Duties of the Auditor.  It is essential for Audit Services to be independent of the activities audited.  We have no direct responsibility or authority over the City activities reviewed.  Therefore, review and appraisal of activities does not relieve the City’s management from its responsibility.

We perform our duties in conformity with generally accepted professional standards issued by the Comptroller General of the United States in Government Auditing Standards.   Accordingly such standards require a peer review every three years.  We received the highest rating of compliance with these standards in 2003, 2006 and 2009.  These Peer Reviews may be viewed via the links located in the right side column on this page.
