Emissions Extension
An emissions extension may be issued for the reasons listed below:
- Out of State Student - A vehicle owner or immediate family member who is out of state attending school on a full-time basis.
- Out of State Military - A vehicle owner and/or spouse who is out of state on active duty in a branch of the United States military.
- Seasonally Out of State - A vehicle owner who spends the winter months of Colorado in a state with a warmer climate and returns to Colorado in the spring.?? It is strongly recommended that the vehicle owner change the registration cycle to coincide with when the vehicle is in Colorado to avoid the necessity of obtaining an Emissions Extension every year.
- Vehicle Disabled Out of State - A vehicle owner and/or immediate family member who had the vehicle out of state when it became disabled due to an accident, mechanical or electrical failure.? The vehicle owner or family member may be required to send repair receipts from the repair shop or store where parts where purchased and/or any accident report, if applicable.
- Working Out of State - A vehicle owner and/or immediate family member who is working in any capacity out of state.? Some states require the vehicle to be registered in their state if a resident from another state is working in their state (i.e. Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Florida, Louisiana, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Texas, Utah and Wyoming).? It may also be required that the individual obtain an emissions test from the state the vehicle is currently in to keep registration in Colorado.
- Temporarily Out of State - A vehicle owner and/or immediate family member who is temporarily out of state for a family emergency, caring for a sick relative, settling a family estate, etc.? This category should not be confused with "Working Out of State".
