Academic Development

Once applicants have been hired and become Safety Cadets there are a few academic requirements that all Cadets must adhere to while in the program. These include:

 

  • Cadets must take courses during the fall and spring semesters. Summer and Winter courses are available but not required.
  • Cadets must take a minimum of ten credit hours each semester.
  • Cadets must declare a major. A major may be in any subject of the Cadets choosing.
  • Cadets must earn a “C” or better in :
      • An English/Writing skills course (i.e. Freshman Composition)
      • A Communication Skills course (i.e. Public Speaking)
      • Social/Cultural/Community Service courses (i.e. Sociology)
  • Cadets must take courses that work toward completion of their degree.
  • Cadets must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
  • If Cadets wish to enter into any of the available academies they must maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA.

Achievement

Cadets receive special recognition for taking courses recommended by the Cadet Program as outlined by the Program Administrator. These courses often include:

 

o   Spanish Language

o   First Responder/Emergency Rescue

o   Youth, Drugs, and Gangs

o   American Sign Language

o   Nutrition

o   Ethics

 

The emphasis of the Cadet Program is intellectual development for individual Cadets in school. Cadets schedule their work assignment hours around their school courses to ensure that there are no conflicts with scheduling. The Safety Cadet Program offers the opportunity of a obtaining a college degree.  Cadets also receive a competitive wage while working in the Department of Safety.
