Cadet Program Overview

The Denver Public Safety Cadet Program is a specialized training and education program to help strengthen the future workforce of the Denver Police, Fire, and Sheriff sworn ranks.  Selected applicants, through a merit based process, typically enter the Cadet Program as recent high school graduates or those with less than two years of completed college credit.

The Cadet Program may contribute up to 25% of those that complete the program successfully to each police or fire academy new hire class.

The Cadet Program is authorized under city charter as a function of the Manager of Safety.

Currently there are 36 Denver Public Safety Cadets working in various police, fire, or sheriff assignments while attending UCD or Metro State in pursuit of a four year college degree.

Internally, Cadets may be classified as Sr. Cadet Leader, Cadet Leader, or Cadet.  Opportunities also exist to lead special training or functional groups within the program to help build additional leadership and decision making skills.

Day to day operations are facilitated by Cadet Program Department Coordinators within each department.  A Cadet Program Administrator oversees the administrative, policy, and procedural duties of the program under the Office of the Manager of Safety.
